Velvet Over Steel

This story is personal...

I began writing this show in 2016, just after the election. I had always wanted to write a WWII/Holocaust story with characters immersed in the arts and how war affected them. The silver-lining of living through the emotional winter of 2016 was being able to write a story that encompassed how I felt as a jewish woman, very much in the present, where anti-semitism was (and still is) on the rise and the political world was crashing around us (…still kind of is…). My sister Cherise Glodowski joined me on this journey and co-wrote the book with me of Velvet Over Steel, infusing this historical fiction with real personal stories from our family tree. In the spring of 2017, we put on a staged reading featuring the 7 original cast members, and close friends: Donald Sutton, Jessica Braun, Matty Reda, Kelly Toland, Jane K. Simmons, and I took on the leading lady, Rosie Glass. Getting even more personal, my mother Laurie Glodowski (35th Parallel Productions) stepped in as the director. This workshop was my first full-length musical performed live, and continues to be a story I hold near to my heart. What’s next? Stay tuned.
